AFC Darwen: FA Vase Preview

The Reds begin their Carslberg FA Vase campaign this weekend in the Second Qualifying Round with a trip to the West Pennine Moors.

Still waiting for that elusive first win of the season, manager Paul Moore will be hoping for a change of luck this Saturday after his team struck the woodwork four times in Wednesday’s penalty shoot out defeat to Formby in the Liverpool Senior Cup.  A run comparable to last season’s campaign, where the Reds were knocked out in the Second Round Proper by the eventual winners Whitley Bay, would provide welcome relief to the Reds’ current league form.

However, they face an AFC Darwen side that has turned around a poor start to the season. After four consecutive defeats, during which they conceded eighteen goals while scoring two, the hosts have won four of their last five games, including, in the last round of this competition, a 4-3 extra time win over AFC Blackpool.

AFC Liverpool have twice previously visited the Anchor Ground. The first time was in March 2009, when they won 2-1 in the league against Darwen FC, and the second visit was last season, when the resurrected AFC Darwen returned to the North West Counties. On that occasion, on the first day of the season, the hosts won by a solitary goal.

Should the tie end in a draw on Saturday, there will be a replay at Valerie Park next Thursday, the 29th September, with a 7.45pm kick off.
