AFC Darwen v AFC Liverpool - Match Report

AFC Liverpool’s first pre season game of the 2009-10 campaign ended in a disappointing 3-0 defeat to AFC Darwen at the Anchor Ground.

The Reds, sporting their new white away kit, were returning to the scene of a 2-1 win last March but their opponents were a newly formed club risen out of the ashes of the previous Darwen FC who went into liquidation in the summer. As such the Lancashire side will now be playing their football in West Lancashire League this coming season.

The Reds team was a mixture of familiar and new faces, with the likes of Liam Coyne, Dean Thurston and Mark Bloxam being joined by youngster Darren Torpey and Todd Bamber a summer signing from Holker Old Boys.

Darwen started the better and forced a few corners in the first five minutes. Their pressure was rewarded when they took the lead in the 12th minute, Karl Turner turning in a cross from the right past Paul Willis. Brimming with confidence, the home side doubled their lead ten minutes later through Paul Pasteraro. Shortly before half time Turner got his second and Darwen’s third when he cut in from the left and curled the ball into the net.

AFC Liverpool had a mountain to climb in the second half and a number of changes were made as Derek Goulding sought to give as many of his players as possible a run out. The game was far more evenly balanced but the Reds didnt find the net till the closing stages through a brilliant Phil Ojapah overhead kick which was inexplicably ruled out for offside.
