AFC Liverpool 0 - Holker Old Boys 1

AFC Liverpool’s hopes of promotion to the premier division of the Vodkat League suffered a major blow on Wednesday when they were beaten 1-0 at home by Holker Old Boys.

The game was very open to begin with, the visitors not being afraid to attack the Reds and chances falling to either side. Ian Sheridan was AFC’s main threat, firing over from 30 yards and also creating a chance for himself but shooting just wide after finding space. Matty Williams hit a free kick over the bar and had a shot well saved by the keeper, while Dean Thurston hit a good low effort that went just wide.

However Holker had their chances too, forcing some good saves from Paul Willis and nearly scoring from a well worked corner. The Reds were then denied two penalty appeals when Thurston went down in the box and the ball appeared to strike a players hand on the line. Both were waved away and when the referee did point to the spot it was at the other end in the 35th minute, Williams being penalised and the subsequent kick being converted.

The visitors could have gone into the break further ahead but a free kick rebounded back off the post. The second half was nowhere near as frantic as the first, the best chance falling to Williams whose header across the keeper was just wide. Holker dug in and worked hard for their win, being first to the second ball on most occasions. AFC looked nervous in the final third and resorted the long ball at times on a frustrating night for players and fans alike.

AFC Liverpool have a chance to avenge the defeat straightaway, with their next game against away to Holker Old Boys. Kick Off 3pm Saturday 25th April 2009.
