Afc Liverpool 0 - Irlam FC 2

A well organised Irlam team took all three points on Wednesday, beating AFC Liverpool 2-0.

The game was a very tight affair during the first half, with both sides struggling to find a way through each other’s back lines.

Irlam came close to breaking the deadlock on 27 minutes with a goal line scuffle that finally ended in the hands of keeper Terry McCormick.

Ian Johnson later had a spectacular shot on the half volley that had Irlam’s keeper at full stretch to tip over the bar.

Near the end of the first half Ryan Wignall took a mazy run and came close to scoring with a shot that glanced wide of the keeper’s far post.

The first half was to remain goal less as neither team could find the cutting edge needed.

AFC Liverpool had the first real chance of the second half, as again Ian Johnson had a low shot outside the box following a corner. Irlam’s keeper could only initially parry the shot but managed to retain control of the rebound.

A few minutes later Irlam hit the crossbar after a set piece, and took the lead five minutes later when Ben Young fired a low shot that McCormick was unlucky to see past him.

The reds pushed forwards for the equaliser, with Ian Johnson in the thick of the action, again having a shot tipped over the bar.

However Irlam doubled their lead when Anthony Roberts rose with a well positioned header into the far corner.

AFC Liverpool didn’t stop looking for their first goal of the night, with Dave Eaton forcing a good save. In the end it wasn’t to be, and Irlam deserved three points in what was a very good performance away from home.

AFC Liverpool’s next game is Saturday 22 November against Padiham. 3pm kick off, Valerie Park, Prescot.
