AFC Liverpool 1 - Chadderton 1

AFC Liverpool’s promotion hopes faded this weekend despite a spirited performance, drawing 1-1 with Chadderton.

A late Chadderton equaliser ended AFC Liverpool’s fading hopes of promotion on 2nd May.

The Reds had to win to keep up the pursuit of Padiham in the race for the second promotion spot but they were dealt a blow a minute into the game when Phil Ojapah was forced to leave the field with a facial injury, to be replaced by debutant Joe Evans.

Chadderton were able to take advantage of this early change and had two good opportunities in the first five minutes, Paul Willis saving one shot and another going wide.

AFC’s first chance came after a quarter of an hour from a Mark Bloxam free kick which was headed on by Liam Coyne to Dean Thurston but his header was straight into the keepers arms. The Reds eventually got the goal they needed in the 41st minute when Andy McCoy converted a penalty after Ryan Wignall was brought down in the area.

There were not many chances in the second half, although McCoy did go close with a snap shot that went just wide. Five minutes from time Chadderton equalised when Crothers turned in a cross from the left.

In the 87th minute AFC almost regained the lead in an almighty goalmouth scramble after a corner which saw a save made and the ball cleared off the line twice.

The result coupled with Padihams win over Wigan Robin Park meant that promotion was now out of reach, but it didn’t stop the crowd staying behind and giving the players an encouraging round of applause as they did a lap of the field.
