AFC Liverpool 1 v 3 Daisy Hill - Match result

AFC Liverpool’s winless streak continued as they went down 3-1 to Daisy Hill at Valerie Park.

Two Goals from Daniel Gregory and one from Kier McNeil wiped out Matty Williams’ early opener and sees the Reds slip further behind in the promotion race.

Playing one of their games in hand, the home side got off to the best possible start on three minutes. From a corner, Andy McCoy spotted Williams in space at the edge of the area. The low delivery was met first time by the midfielder and his low strike burst through a crowd of players to nestle in the back of the net.

Buoyed by the early success, AFC Liverpool quickly settled. Comfortable in possession, the midfield began to dominate and were unfortunate not to find the decisive pass in the final third. McCoy came the closest to extending the lead but both his efforts were well parried by Daisy Hill keeper Scott Moore.

For the second successive game though, AFC Liverpool conceded right at the start of the second half. Hesitant defending resulted in Willis upending Gregory and the Daisy Hill striker picked himself up to level the score.

A quick riposte from Chris Parkes saw the ball flash past the upright before the visitors took the lead. James Gaskell’s header-on from a throw-in found McNeil in space inside the box and he slotted home from twelve yards.

Reds boss Derek Goulding immediately went on the offensive, bringing on Lanre Giwa and the returning Dean Thurston, followed shortly after by Ian Orme. The Reds soon re-asserted themselves upon the match and created a slew of chances but could not convert.

Parkes brought a flying save out of Moore and saw another effort whistle past the post. Bamber saw his cross-come-shot rebound back off the crossbar and three other crosses needed last ditch intervention to prevent the equaliser.

With the match drawing to a conclusion and the Reds pushed forward, Daisy Hill broke through Gregory. Michael Pryce’s clearance was latched onto by the striker and he bagged his second of the game with a low drive into the far corner from the edge of the area.

It was a cruel blow for the Reds who deserved more from the game. The result sees them remain seventh in the table and hoping for better fortune against Glossop North End in the Vodkat League Cup.
