AFC Liverpool 1 Wigan Robin Park 2 - with photos

AFC Liverpool fell to their first defeat of the season, as the Manager of the Month curse struck once more, but remain on top of the league.

The Reds played host to fellow newcomers Wigan Robin Park, and it was the visitors who emerged with the spoils from a well contested match.

The Reds took time to click with a new midfield, and chances for both sides were limited in the first half.

In a match that looked like the opening goal would be crucial, it was AFC Liverpool who had the ball in the back of the net first, yet the goal was disallowed and the corner had to be retaken.

At half time it was goalless, but second half was more open.

Dean Thurston shot at Wigan’s keeper from a fine Ian Sheridan cutback, and Sheridan shortly after shot wide of the goal.

But it was Wigan’s Ben Kay, from the penalty spot, who put the visitors one up, sending Reds’ keeper Terry McCormick the wrong.

Their lead was short lived. Fine work from Sheridan inside the penalty area led to the opportunity to cross from the byline for league top scorer Thurston to put the game level once more.

Yet Wigan were not to be undone, and took the lead again on 65 minutes. McCormick’s fine save rebounded onto the shins of AFC Liverpool’s Dave Eaton and into the back of the net for an own goal.

AFC Liverpool sent wave after wave of attack in search of an equaliser, but despite many chances were unable to get the telling breakthrough.

Attendance: 604
