AFC Liverpool 2 - 3 Holker Old Boys - Match Result

Holker Old Boys produced a smash and grab raid to snatch all three points as they came away from Valerie Park with a 3-2 win. Strikes from Andy McCoy and Karl Gornell were not enough for the Reds as Kevin Watkin, Michael Kewley and an own goal from Patrick O’Driscoll ensured that the visitors won for the second consecutive season at Valerie Park.

After an even handed opening twenty minutes, it was Holker who struck first through Watkin. A free kick delivered into the area was headed back to him by Brian Dawson. Watkin controlled it on his chest before lobbing a volley from the edge of the area which snuck in under the bar.

Two minutes later though, AFC Liverpool were level. Phil Stafford’s forty yard cross field ball found Chris Parkes. The Reds’ striker took one touch to control before laying off a through ball, which McCoy raced onto before sliding a low drive past Benjamin Morsby.

AFC Liverpool took the lead on fifty minutes when Gornell’s shot from the edge of the area was deflected by Steven Thompson. Morsby was wrong footed and could only watch the ball roll slowly over the goal-line.

With AFC Liverpool seemingly in control of the match, and looking the most likely to score, the Old Boys levelled on sixty four minutes. Kewley was given too much room at the back post where he met a Brian Dawson cross to guide his header back over Willis.

Stung into action the Reds went in search of a third goal and camped themselves in the H half. McCoy, Parkes and John Kennedy all tried their luck from the edge of the area but failed to find the target whilst Liam Coyne had a shout for a penalty ignored when pushed in the back.

With the home side pressing forward in search of the winner, they were dealt the cruellest of blows. O’Driscoll cut out a ball over the top but his back header was aimed at the spot Willis had just vacated. The Reds’ keeper scrambled back in vain as the ball rolled into the empty net.

In the final ten minutes, the Holker defence were resolute as they survived a succession of corners but for all the possession and pressure, AFC Liverpool were unable to find that elusive third goal.
