AFC Liverpool keep pressure on at the top

Holker Old Boys 0 - AFC Liverpool 2

AFC Liverpool came away from Cumbria victorious on Saturday, with 2 goals from Eaton and Thurston enough to claim all three points in a deserved win.

The reds started the game brightly, with Thurston breaking one on one with the keeper but his shot was just wide of the keeper’s right hand post.

Thurston had another chance following a nice run down the right from Sheridan, but the keeper was well positioned and saved comfortably.  Shortly after Holker Old Boys forced a good save from Willis as their number 7 found space in the area.

AFC Liverpool had the lion’s share of posession in the first half, but the only other real chance came from a glancing Liam Coyne header following a Ryan Wignall free kick that was just over the crossbar.

The second half ended 0-0 with AFC Liverpool unlucky not to have a goal to show for their workrate.

With AFC Liverpool playing downhill in the second half they started brightly, with Dave Eaton taking his chance one on one with the keeper to slot home low to the left hand post to make it 1-0.

6 minutes later Thurston buried home with a shot from 8 yards to double the lead, following a good run by Wignall.

AFC Liverpool had more chances to increase their lead, Wignall forced a good save from the Holker keeper to turn the ball around the post. Bloxam also had a chance late on only a few yards out, the ball over the bar where in an opportunity he’ll be disappointed to miss.

It was a solid performance from AFC Liverpool and keeps the pressure on Padiham and Stone Dominoes in the chase for promotion.

AFC Liverpool’s next game is at home to fellow promotion rivals Stone Dominoes, on Wednesday 29th April, kick off 7.45pm at Valerie Park, Hope Street, Prescot
