AFC Liverpool Stay Top

AFC Liverpool, beat Rochdale Town 3-1 at Valerie Park last Saturday to stay on top of the Vodkat League 1st Division on a day two of their closest rivals dropped points.

The Reds were kicking towards the Kop in the first half and took the game to Rochdale, whose keeper was forced to make a couple of good saves early on. Phil Ojapah also went close with a good downward header from a corner that bounced just wide of the post.

On the half hour the Reds took a deserved lead through a penalty converted by Dean Thurston, who fired the ball to the keepers right as he dived to his left. But five minutes later Rochdale were level Danny Makin and the scores remained that way at half time.

Three minutes after the restart Thurston restored AFC’s lead and on 55 minutes had a chance to complete his hat trick when another penalty was awarded. This time the keep didn’t commit himself to dive so quickly and in the end didn’t even need to, as the kick was sent high over the bar.

Dave Eaton increased the lead after 63 minutes and AFC stayed in control of the game, with only a resilient display by the visitors keeper stopped the Reds from winning by a far higher score.

The win keeps AFC on top of the 1st division, six points clear of Padiham although the Lancashire side have four games in hand. There was good news from elsewhere though with the news that Bootle were surprisingly held to a draw by bottom side Ashton Town and Wigan Robin Park were beaten by Oldham Town.
