AFC Liverpool Win Away

A second half goal from Martin Smeaton was enough to give AFC Liverpool all three points in their Vodkat League 1st Division match away to Cheadle Town on 7th February.

The game was preceded by the home sides manager Steve Brokenbrow being presented with the manager of the month award for January following three wins and a draw from their four games. But the first half was a scrappy affair with very little goalmouth incident, although Dean Thurston did have a penalty appeal turned down after going down following a challenge by Cheadle keeper O’Keefe.

On the hour Martin Smeaton broke the deadlock when he skipped past Neil Logan before running on to slot the ball past O’Keefe from the right corner of the six yard box.

There were few other clear cut chances in the game, with O’Keefe, winner of the Vodkat Leagues ‘safe hands’ award for January, dealing easily with anything else AFCL could throw at him. At the other end the main scare for the Reds came late on when Mike Myers found himself with a clear shooting opportunity only to fire the ball straight at Jack Baker.

After losing to two late goals in their previous game, this was a satisfying win for the Reds. The players responded well and showed that in addition to playing free flowing football they can also grind out results when required difficult pitches. The win takes AFCL seven points clear of Padiham, although the Lancashire side have four games in hand.
