Anfield Community Day Reward for LFC/AFC Liverpool Premier League Health Course Attendees

On Wednesday the 18th of May, 12 lucky men from AFC Liverpool’s Men’s Premier League Health Courses were invited to live out their lifetime dream playing at Anfield.

It was also a good day for the Club as it was the first time the AFC Liverpool shirt has been worn at the famous stadium, albeit it was our away kit. On the night the men represented an AFC Liverpool XI  and played a final match against an LFC XI and narrowly lost 1-0. A great night was had by all!

Gary Beggs, who heads up Business Development at AFC Liverpool and also helps run the Premier League health courses, stated ” I want to send out a big thank you on behalf of AFC Liverpool, to Liverpool Football Club and Liverpool FC Action4health, who made this happen for us. The courses have been superb for our local communities and I am delighted we are raising awareness of men’s health around the city and long may it continue! The opportunity for the lads to play at Anfield was an amazing experience and what made it extra special is looking at the smiles on everyone’s faces; we are really making a difference!”

We have been working closely with LFC and its action 4 health program for almost a year now and our working relationship is superb. We have now completed our fourth Premier League health course and every male who has attended has made some real lifestyle changes. Some have lost a lot of weight, some have gained extra fitness, but most importantly everyone has gained knowledge that will help themselves and also it will help their friends and families as they will be passing on the information learned, acting as signposts!

We have achieved so much this year and we plan to continue this working relationship long into the future. After every course we have made more and more improvements from feedback and we now have an excellent course set up. Each course is 8 weeks in length and each session is 2 hours long. The first hour of each session is an information hour, ranging from cancer awareness to nutrition information, diets and even practical cooking. The second hour of each course is a fitness session and you can choose from either a gym session or a circuit training session - the option is there for the men to choose what suits them best. We have also introduced free passes to Lifestyles Gyms on completion of the LFC handbooks, and introduced the drop a shirt campaign where if a male drops a shirt size between the beginning and the end of the course they will get a free football shirt!

The good news for all this is that it is all free for males in the Liverpool area aged 18+ and all the courses are run on a Tuesday evening in the Breckfield North Everton centre BNENC.

We are about to launch our next course in September to burn off those holiday pounds and everyone who attends will be invited to Anfield for our celebratory event where there will be food and a famous former LFC guest speaker in attendance.

If any males from Liverpool aged 18+ would like to attend our September course please get in touch with Gary Beggs by e-mailing [email protected] as soon as possible, as places are filling up fast. LFC action 4 health have got more than 500 males through these courses already which proves they are a massive success!

In the second picture of the lads in front of the KOP you may notice the blue paint marks on the lads faces; this is for awareness of Blue September, a campaign for men to face up to cancer. You can find more information about this campaign by visiting http://www.blueseptember.org.uk/

The LFC Action for Health Men’s Health programme is funded by the Premier League, Football Pools and Liverpool PCT.
