Ashton Town 0 AFC Liverpool 3 - with photos

AFC Liverpool powered to the top of the league with a comfortable away win at Ashton Town.

It was a quick return for the Reds, whose footballing life began at Ashton just a few weeks ago.

Talisman James Dever was missing for AFC Liverpool with an injury sustained in last week’s clash at Chadderton, with his place filled by youngster Kevin Poole.

Winger Ian Sheridan terrorised the Ashton defence throughout the game and it was his blistering run that led to the opening goal on fifteen minutes.

Having beat two men, Sheridan sent in a tremendous cross that fell to striker Dean Thurston. Thurston took his time before powering in a great strike that would have beaten most keepers. But Ashton’s Neil McCormick dived low to his right to make an outstanding stop.

Unfortunately for Ashton, reds full back Martin Crowder was alert to the rebound and struck it powerfully into the roof of the net.

Ashton’s best chance came as a result of a defensive error, leaving AFC Liverpool keeper Terry McCormick at the mercy of the Ashton attack. He stood up well and produced a fantastic save at his left hand post to palm it wide for the corner.

Many fans were still returning from their half time refreshments when the visitors extended their lead. More good work from Sheridan led to the opportunity which fell to midfield man Ian Johnson, who made no mistake with a fine drive.

Keeper Neil McCormick made a series of fine saves to keep Ashton’s hopes alive, and even won appreciative applause from the travelling AFC Liverpool support for his performance.

But he was unable to do anything against the vision and finesse of Thurston who produced a lob from the edge of the area that Dennis Bergkamp would have been proud of.

McCormick was in action again to prevent the reds going four nil up, with a tremendous triple save during an attack that finally came to nought.
