Bootle take spoils in Merseyside derby

AFC Liverpool 0 - Bootle FC 1

AFC were left to rue some missed opportunities as Bootle won this derby to cut our lead at the top of the table to three points.

Chances in the first half were few and far between. Andrew Olsen saw a spectacular overhead kick go over the bar and a daisy cutter free kick from the returning James Dever went just wide of the post. Dave Eaton also felt he should have had a penalty when he went down after being challenged by the Bootle keeper but the referee waved play on.

Five minutes after the restart Eaton forced his way into the area only to see his shot gathered at the second attempt after the keeper dropped it at first. A goalmouth scramble also saw Dean Thurston have a shot blocked and Dever felled, but again no penalty was awarded.

Bootle took the lead in the 55th minute when Andy Fowler cut in to the edge of the box after a short corner and fired the ball past Paul Willis.

The Reds were dominant for the rest of the game but couldn’t convert this into goals. Olsen was denied by a last gasp sliding tackle by the keeper after Mark Bloxam flicked a Thurston cross on, and he also shot over after being teed up by Eaton. Liam Coyne twice tried his luck from distance but one effort went wide and the other was blocked.

Bootle almost made it 2-0 late on when a Willis clearance was returned goalwards from 50 yards but the Reds keeper managed to tip the ball round the post. The visitors also had a goal disallowed for a foul on the keeper.

Late in the game Andy McCoy’s free kick from the edge of the box was easily saved and Bloxam had a looping header go just over the bar as it just wasn’t to be our night. The defeat leaves us three points clear of Bootle, who have three games in hand.

AFC Liverpool’s next game is home to Norton United in the first leg of the Vodkat First Division Trophy Semi Final on Saturday 21st March. Kick Off 3pm at Valerie Park, Hope St, Prescot.
