Chadderton 1 - 1 AFC Liverpool - Match Result

AFC Liverpool drew against Chadderton with Andy McCoy scoring the only goal for AFCL.

AFC Liverpool battled for a well earned draw against a hard working Chadderton at Andrew Street, after Andy McCoy’s early opener was cancelled out soon afterwards by Sean Nolan.
The Reds again started brightly and could have gone ahead as early as the second minute. McCoy’s through ball found Chris Parkes on the edge of the area and the striker’s first time shot was well saved by Lee Swanson. However, the Chadderton keeper could do nothing to deny McCoy four minutes later as the diminutive winger cum striker flew in at the back post to head in John Kennedy’s cross.
The home side drew level on eleven minutes. Gareth Morris worked his way to the bye-line and his cross was met by Nolan, whose deft header went beyond the reach of the outstretched arms of Paul Willis into the far corner.
In the last of the flurry of opening exchanges, the Reds keeper was called into action as he denied James Curley when he broke clean though into the area.
The remainder of the half was played at a hectic pace as both teams gave each other little time on the ball to create any real openings. McCoy’s low drive from the right hand corner of the area whizzed past the upright, whilst at the other end Adam Edwards blasted wide when he got onto the end of Liam Ratcliffe’s cross.
The second half was a more open affair, as both teams created enough chances to take all three points, with the home side rattling the bar on two occasions.
Parkes should have done better when he misfired after latching onto Phil Stafford’s through ball but he almost profited when Swanson’s attempted clearance rebounded off the Reds’ striker. Fortunately for the Chadderton keeper, he was able to recover the ball before it rolled into the back of the net.
McCoy turned this way and that one too many times as he lost the opportunity to shoot when played through by Karl Gornell and Parkes was only denied by a last ditch block by Ben Greenidge as he broke his way through to the edge of the six yard box before shooting.
In between, Willis had to get down low to deny Andrew Pheby as he shot from the edge of the area and Morris was inches away from connecting with Curley’s free kick when unmarked six yards out.
McCoy couldn’t convert when Darren Torpey returned a Gornell cross into the six yard box and then the winger, recently signed from Formby, broke from inside his own half before shooting wide from just outside the area.
Back at the other end, Willis’ fingertip save diverted Pheby’s rasping drive onto the bar and when the Reds’ keeper was beaten by Nolan’s twenty yard screamer, the woodwork once again denied Chadderton. Nolan then hit his own woodwork as he stuck out a leg to block a Gornell cross only to see the ball loop onto the top of the crossbar.
In the end neither side could find a winner, with the draw a fair reflection of the endeavour of both sides.
