Early Friendly Celebrates Joe Fagan

Published on May 15, 2008

AFC Liverpool will be commemorating the 50th anniversary of Joe Fagan’s arrival at Anfield, by playing a preseason friendly with the first club he ever managed.

On Saturday 19th July, AFC Liverpool will travel to Nelson FC in Lancashire, where they will compete for the Joe Fagan Commemorative Trophy.

Joe Fagan first joined Liverpool in 1958 as a coach, and went on to win the treble as manager.

AFC Liverpool spokesperson Alun Parry said: “Joe was a legendary manager who was both a gentleman and a great servant to Liverpool Football Club. AFC Liverpool are delighted to commemorate him by playing for this trophy against the club where he started off in management.

We are sure that AFC Liverpool fans will be keen to travel to Lancashire, not only for an early glimpse of the AFC Liverpool team, but also to honour the great Joe Fagan.”

Nelson FC play at Victoria Park. Between 1921 and 1931 they were members of the football league. Joe Fagan was Nelson’s player manager from 1951 to 1953.
