Irlam FC Res v AFC Liverpool Res - Match Report

After a very intensive pre-season build up, which included playing 4 games, using 9 “new” Youth team players in the process, it was good to get our League season under way with a testing challenge at Irlam FC.
Irlam are a “Community Club” in the truest sense and our games against them last season were some of our toughest. A 4-1 home defeat and a 3-1 loss away, reminded us what a difficult opening day fixture we’d been given. Before the game I told the players we would have to be at our best to compete with our Mancunian counterparts.
With the team sheet showing some notable departures from last season, the 5 debutantes, Steve Connolly, Kevin McGarry, Gary Judge, Wes Farrington, Ian Orme, ensured a strong line up would take the field.
From the start, it was apparent the contrasting styles of the teams would produce an open, end to end encounter. Despite constant pressure from both sides, the 1st half ended, honours even, despite the fact we appeared to have a perfectly good goal ruled out for offside, on the half hour mark.
At the start of the 2nd half, we quickly settled into a good rhythmn, moving the ball quickly and efficiantly. Good openings were being created and if we’d been more clinical in and around the 18 yrd box, our work would have been rewarded with a goal or two. Irlam continued to threaten us with their direct style and our defence had to be focused to ensure we didn’t concede.
On 65 mins, we altered the formation slightly, introducing another debutant, Brad Gregson.
As the game entered the latter stages, Irlam pushed forward.
Our decision to employing a more compact midfield meant gaps appeared for our wide men to exploit. On 82 mins, a cleverly guided pass by Kevin McEllin, found Lanre Giwa in space, he raced clear to cooly score the teams first goal of the season.
Despite a late scare, we continued to press the Irlam goal and when the referee blew the final whistle, we realised what a good result and performance this had been.
Final score,
Irlam FC Reserves 0   AFC Liverpool 1  ( L Giwa )
Team,  S Connolly, D Jones, C Murphy, D Lyons (cap), K McGarry ( D Connolly 45mins), G Judge, K McEllin, W Farrington, C Opare, I Orme ( B Gregson 65 mins), L Giwa.
Subs unused J Smith, S Mass (gk)
Opponents nominated MotM Danny Lyons
We would just mention and note the hard work and dedication of the Committee and Volunteers who run Irlam FC. They are very much like us, a Club trying to give a quality game of football on a Saturday, to local people, using young local players. I hope next time we visit, they’ve achieved their aim of having a Clubhouse and Function Suite in place .
