Late Jones Goal Give Reds Victory

Steve Jones’ eighty ninth minute strike snatched all the points for AFC Liverpool after they let slip a two goal lead. Francis Barry and Darren Torpey put them in command at the break but two from Louis Mayers seemed to have rescued a point for Squires Gate.

The home side, looking to put last week’s cup exit behind them, were the better side from the kick off and should have perhaps gone into the break with a greater lead. Only five minutes passed before some good pressuring from Barry and Alex Kevan resulted in Jones flashing a shot a yard wide from ten yards.

On twenty minutes James Buckley should have at least shot on target following the move of the match. Steven Williams won the ball on the edge of his own area and after a burst and a one two with Jones, released Barry down the right. The striker returned the ball to Williams before the midfielder rolled to ball onto Buckley, who blasted over from eight yards.

Buckley fired in a half volley from the corner of the box and thirty second later Steve Corris released Barry, who forced wide, couldn’t quite find the target. Steven Williams’ drive was blocked and when the ball was returned into the box, Buckley’s effort was tame.

The breakthrough eventually arrived on thirty six minutes via the direct route. A long ball straight down the middle of the park by Jack Sinnott found Barry on the edge of the box and with his first touch, the striker knocked the ball past the advancing Neil Beesley into an empty net.

Two minutes later some controlled possession worked the chance for Steven Williams to attack down the right, presenting Barry the opportunity to cross to the back post where Torpey headed in to double AFC Liverpool’s lead.

Leon Bimpson wasn’t called into action until the last minute of the half as he was forced to parry Mayers’ volley from the edge of the box but the away side were the more productive of the two teams after the break.

Andrew Richards’ early shot didn’t trouble Bimpson but it signalled Gate’s intent as they went on the offensive. For the most part, the Reds’s defence got in the necessary tackles and blocks but they kept inviting pressure on themselves by squandering possession and Joseph Shelmeridine should have punished a softly conceded free kick. Benedict Fishwick’s delivery found Shelmerdine six yards out but his header fizzed over the bar.

He atoned though on sixty seven minutes when after robbing Anthony Brown, he broke to the byline before setting up Mayers for a sidefooted finish.

Shelmerdine was a the thick of the action soon after, staying on his feet amid shouts for a penalty to set up a powerful drive from Fishwick from the edge of the box. Bimpson could only parry but was quickly on his feet to deny Andrew Harvie on the follow up.

It was looking as though the Reds might ride out the storm but five minutes from time some loose control from Chris Williams saw him upend Richards on the edge of the box and Mayers took full advantage, as he drove the dead ball low into the corner.

Before thoughts of a complete turnaround could form, AFC Liverpool were suddenly breaking forward with numbers but Buckley fired wide from the edge of the area when better options were available.

With the game heading for a draw, the two points were snatched back in fine style by Jones. Connah Lewis’ knock on caused confusion between Beesley, Alexander McKendrick and Thomas Bartlett which Jones took full advantage of, hooking the ball away from them to set himself up for a driven half volley from the edge of the box that could prove to be pivotal.
