Leek CSOB 1 - 2 AFC Liverpool - Match Result

Tod Bamber grabbed a dramatic late winner for AFC Liverpool as they came from behind against Leek CSOB after Andy Olsen had cancelled out Shane Reaney’s opener.

The first half was a fairly even contest but it was the Reds who twice came the closest to breaking deadlock in a little over a minute.

Firstly Conor Murphy’s free kick had to be touched over by Robert Hackney. Then from the resulting corner, Bamber’s looping volley from a tight angle was headed off the goal-line by Dean Owen.

Hackney then had to pull off a flying save to palm away a rasping twenty five yard drive from Patrick O’Driscoll.

At the other end, Paul Willis was mainly a spectator, only having one save to make when Stephen Plant broke in behind the Reds’ defence.

Two minutes into the second half though it was the home side who took the lead. Coming onto Plant’s cut back, Reaney’s first shot from six yards came back off Willis but he made sure at the second attempt as he smashed home.

The Old Boys pushed for a second but were reduced to a couple of long range efforts before they found themselves pegged back through Olsen. Unchallenged twelve yards out, he headed O’Driscoll’s cross into the top corner past a static Hackney.

As the game appeared to be petering out to a draw, it was turned upside down and then flipped over in the final three minutes.

Firstly River Humphryes, on his return for the Reds, was dismissed after receiving his second yellow card. Then Andy McCoy chased after what appeared to be a lost cause before he was hauled back by Brett Barlow on the edge of the area, an action for which the Leek defender received a straight red.

From the resulting free kick, McCoy laid the ball off to Bamber who calmly side footed into the bottom corner to send the travelling support into delirious rapture.

For a team that had had its ability and commitment questioned recently, the result was the perfect response and should spur them on in their forthcoming First Division Trophy semi final against AFC Blackpool this coming Wednesday.
