Norton Utd 2 AFC Liverpool 3

AFC Liverpool rounded off the season by coming from behind to beat Norton united 3-2 in an entertaining game in The Potteries.

The Reds were the better side in the opening stages but the home side took the lead through Marrow after sixteen minutes. However they were behind for just five minutes, with Dean Thurston equalising from eight yards after his first effort was saved.

Ryan Wignall then had a header from an Ian Sheridan cross ruled out for offside and Norton took the lead once more through Carruthers on the half hour.

The game was very much stop start, with the referee and his assistants bringing play to a halt at every opportunity. On one occasion Andy McCoy got a yellow red card for dissent after a decision went against him and as he continued to remonstrate, the referee held his hand up and screamed “Nooooo” to the amusement of the crowd. McCoy did extremely well to keep a straight face following this while the lecture continued and the crowd chanted “the man in black he said no”.

The rain came down as the second half started and after just four McCoy fired AFC level with a great strike from the left hand corner of the area. A few minutes later he almost put the Reds in the lead with a fine 25 yard lob that bounced back off the bar.

Thurston got his second after 71 minutes to deservedly make it 3-2 and the Reds had other opportunities to score, including a clever Thurston back heel being cleared off the line. Norton hardly pressured although they did have two long shots in the closing stages that went well wide. In all it was an entertaining game with the Reds following, who made up at least two thirds of the crowd, being in fine voice throughout as they contemplated at least two months off before the friendlies begin.
