Schwarz Header Gives All Three Points To Bears

Daniel Schwarz’s header on the half hour was the difference as Congleton Town completed a season’s double over AFC Liverpool at Ivy Gardens.

It was a game of few clear cut chances and AFC Liverpool will feel a little hard done by not to take anything from the game. After Wednesday night’s exertions the Reds were sluggish in the first half and though they improved after the break though they lacked the clinical finishing to convert their possession into goals.

Steven Jones came close to opening the scoring on ten minutes when his header from a Steven Williams cross was palmed away by Ashely Woodhouse at full stretch. That save came just a minute after Joseph Guest’s ambitious lob from thirty five yards fell straight into the arms of Leon Bimpson which represented the home side’s only threat before they took the lead on thirty two minutes. David Dempsey’s corner into the near post was flicked on by Andrew Alston and Schwarz merely had to guide the ball into the net from a couple of yards out.

Captain Steve Corris, making his one hundredth appearance for the club, almost found an immediate reply but his half volley dropped the wrong side up the upright and heavy legs lacking energy meant a comfortable end to the half for the home side.

There was a touch more verve about the Reds in the second half but the fizz to open up Congleton Town was still missing. Consequently, Woodhouse wasn’t over exerted as one or two half chances and a couple of dead ball situations were the sum of AFC Liverpool’s play. Nevil Picton’s header from Corris’ deep delivery bounced down into the ground and up into Woodhouse’s arms while Francis Barry’s shot on the turn from the edge of the box went into the keeper’s midriff. Jones and John Lawless were both off target from direct free kicks while Jones watched as his volley went agonisingly the wrong side of the post.

Ironically, for their lack of attacking prowess, it was the home side who came closest to a goal as Jamie Turner’s header came back off the woodwork after some good work down the left by Guest.

Darren Torpey tried his luck from distance but it was Barry who came closest to rescuing a point for the Reds in the dying seconds. Cutting in from the left, he aimed his shot for the far corner but saw it fly a couple of yards wide.
