Vauxhall 4 AFC Liverpool 1 (with photos)

Published on July 31, 2008

The four division difference in leagues told as Vauxhall Motors were comfortable winners, although perhaps not as comfortable as the scoreline suggests.

The hosts had a number of well known faces in their ranks, most notably ex Tranmere star Ged Brannan who enjoyed some friendly banter with the visiting support.

AFC Liverpool started brightly and controlled the first 10 minutes, but a breakaway goal by Thomas Rooney put Motors in front.

A controversial second came soon after following a foul on reds keeper Terry McCormick that saw him substituted for ex Liverpool Reserve Paul Willis.

Vauxhall took command of the game at this point, adding a third, and using the ball well to maintain posession.

A well worked headed goal from AFC Liverpool by Ian Johnson from a Ryan Wignall cross put the reds back into the game before half time, and were unfortunate with a couple of fine strikes that went just over the crossbar.

The second half again saw Vauxhall pass the ball well, at times frustrating AFC Liverpool with their fine posession play.

The reds had a glorious chance to make it 3-2 when the ball was fizzed across the six yard box with a number of players unable to add the all important touch.

Skipper James Dever was unlucky too with a diving header that ended wide of the goal.

AFC Liverpool ended the game with a bright spell of play in the last ten or so minutes.

A 3-2 defeat would perhaps have been a fairer scoreline, but Vauxhall added a fourth with a classy header near the end of the game to give them a deserved victory.
