Vauxhall Motors v AFC Liverpool - Match Report

Conference North side Vauxhall were too strong for AFC Liverpool in last Saturday’s pre season friendly, although the result was insignificant when news was received the following morning that one of the clubs promising youngsters was seriously ill in hospital after a hit and run accident.

AFC had Liam Coyne and Dean Thurston unavailable and the starting eleven was again a mix of youth and experience. Vauxhall’s was closer to their strongest team but for the first half hour the game was evenly matched, despite four divisions separating the two sides. However AFC suffered a double blow soon after the half hour mark when Vauxhall scored twice in quick succession through former Burscough player Josh Hine. His first came when Paul Willis couldnt hold on to a low cross shot by Brian Moogan and his second when he rose to head home a Lee Furlong cross.

For the second half both sides made a number of changes, with Vauzhall including a number of trialists. AFC remained in the game, but Vauxhall extended their lead when Michael Burke converted a Lee Dames cross. Willis then made a brilliant save, turning over Anthony Wrights shot which had come from inside the six yard box.

In last seaons pre season encounter Vauxhall were flattered by the 4-1 scoreline and the same could have been said here had the score stayed the same. But substitute David Ojapah scored twice in the last ten minutes for the Reds. Both goals were fine chips over Mustafa, the first after he had dispossessed Chris Lane and the second when he caught the Vauxhall keeper off his line.

The disappointment of defeat was put into perspective however when news emerged the following day that Matty McDermott, who had been a substitute for Andy McCoy in the game, was knocked down on Dale Street following a night out with his girlfriend. He remains in intensive care in Walton Hospital and the thoughts of everyone at the club are with him and his family.
