Vodkat First Division Trophy Semi Final: AFC Liverpool 3-1 AFC Blackpool

AFC Liverpool booked their place in the final of the Vodkat First Division Trophy thanks to a 3-1 win over AFC Blackpool. Two goals from Andy McCoy and one from Andy Olsen ensured that the Reds will be able to defend their trophy against Cheadle Town on April 29th.

Prior to the match, a minutes silence was observed to commemorate the 96 lives lost at Hillsborough on April 15th 1989. Also remembered were David Wright, brother of Steve Wright of the HJC, as well as Linda Cook, the wife of Tommy Cook, an AFC Liverpool board member and Rachel Williams, daughter of Vodkat League Committee member Ian Williams, all of whom passed away recently.

The Reds started the match positively and almost took an early lead when McCoy shot wide following Olsen’s deft flick on.

However, it was the visitors who broke the deadlock on ten minutes. A quickly taken free kick by Michael Horsfall found Marc Beattie unmarked inside the area and amid claims for offside, he slotted home under Paul Willis.

AFC Blackpool’s lead only lasted three minutes though. Karl Gornell’s precision ball over the top found the run of McCoy and though the chance seemed to have disappeared when keeper Jamie Cook came off his line to challenge, McCoy had the presence of mind to calmly chip the ball over the covering defender Martin Baird.

AFC Liverpool took the lead on thirty four minutes. Gornell played a measured one two with Olsen, bursting down the left to cross for McCoy, who delicately guided the ball into the far corner from eight yards.

AFC Blackpool came within a whisker of equalising three minutes later when, following a disputed corner, Mark Ashall’s header came back off the upright.

On forty three minutes Olsen extended the home side’s lead. McCoy’s clever back header sent Tod Bamber racing into the area and he was unlucky not to claim a goal himself as his shot slammed against the underside of the bar with the ball bouncing down onto the goal-line. However, the rebound sat up nicely for Olsen and he simply guided the ball into the back of the net to claim his third goal in the three games.

AFC Blackpool needed to find an early goal in the second half to haul themselves back into the match, and they almost achieved this on fifty minutes. Coming in unchallenged onto Paul Carroll’s cross, substitute Adam Sumner’s goalbound effort from twelve yards forced Willis into a fine reaction save to palm the ball over the bar.

From the resulting corner though, AFC Liverpool almost put the tie beyond doubt. Breaking quickly, Bamber capitalised on Cook’s hesitation to set up Olsen, who saw his shot headed off the line.

AFC Blackpool pressed forward in search of a goal but they found it hard to break down a resolute Reds defence and the closest they came was when Ben Waddington’s shot rattled the outside of the post.

With AFC Blackpool pushing players forward, the Reds looked to hit on the break. McCoy forced Cook into a point blank save and then saw another effort flash past the upright but they couldn’t find that elusive fourth goal to put the game to bed.

In the end the opposition’s challenge ran out of steam as the minutes ticked by and AFC Liverpool comfortably saw out the game as they look to become the first side to retain the Vodkat Division One Trophy in the twenty year history of the competition.
