AFC Liverpool Announce First Ever Manager

Dated: Sat May 3rd 2008

Former Burscough FC manager, Derek Goulding, has been appointed as the first ever manager of AFC Liverpool.

Goulding, a fearsome centre back as a player at Southport and Bangor City, was most recently the giant killing manager of Burscough FC, where he famously masterminded a shock victory over Gillingham in the FA Cup.

Goulding said: "I am delighted to be the first ever manager of AFC Liverpool. I am an ambitious manager and this is a club with enormous potential. I have been a Liverpool fan all of my life, and I can't wait to build this team. I have always been successful as a player and as a manager, and I'm looking forward to bringing that approach to AFC Liverpool."

Club spokesperson Alun Parry said: "Derek is a very experienced coach and manager. He has managed at a level three leagues above us and outwitted Football League clubs. In non league terms this is a coup equivalent to a League Two side appointing the likes of Martin O'Neill or Harry Redknapp."

Goulding is an A Licensed coach, and promises to bring at least one other A Licensed coach onto his backroom team.

Parry said: "AFC Liverpool could possibly have one of the most qualified backroom staffs around which is great for attracting players keen to improve their game. Derek knows the non league scene inside out. We quickly learned that an expert in the non league scene was key to achieving success on the pitch."

Goulding promises AFC Liverpool fans exciting attacking football. He said: "I like my teams to play football. I always set my teams up to try to win rather than simply to avoid getting beat. I was told at Burscough that my team was the most exciting and the best footballing side they had ever had. I want to bring that here to AFC Liverpool."

Parry said: "We believe that, in Derek, we have appointed an outstanding manager. He knows the scene which is crucial. He has great contacts in the game. He is a great improver of players, and he is setting up an infrastructure here at AFC Liverpool which is ideal for the extensive youth system we are developing."
